Keyhole Garden

September 2012:

Thank goodness it was a lovely sunny day to make our first Keyhole garden – a new growing space for the Good Grounding project.

At 9.30a.m our volunteers arrive; Harold, Alex and Sue were all ready and raring to go! First we started to make a trench for the wood chip path – (Sue’s idea to help contain the garden) and place the stakes for the compost area - this required some muscle from the farm team!
By the end of the morning we had managed to stick to our schedule and build the stone wall and path just in time for lunch …

The finished Keyhole Garden
In the afternoon the fun really started; piling on the manure to the compost area and building up the growing space with soil and more manure - everyone got stuck in! The garden started to take shape and by 3pm it was tea and cake time…

Just a few more bags of woodchip to fill in the path –Sue and I were in charge of this and the garden was complete.

What a fantastic day, mission accomplished thanks to the farm and education team, and most of all our volunteers for giving up their time for free.
Can’t wait to start growing some lovely winter garlic with our Good grounding group.

Smothie Madness

The end of the summer term saw four Good Grounding groups from Charnock, Lower Meadows, Arbourthorne and Phillimore primary schools taking part in their final session of the year.
We had a fantastic time harvesting the fruit the children had helped to plant earlier in the year and then enjoying making (and tasting!) over two hundred strawberry smoothies between us, which definitely covered our 5 a day!
A great way to end the term, thanks to all the schools involved and to Simply Health for sponsoring many of these visits.
